The Brenau University Athletic department celebrated National Fitness Day with the local Boys and Girls Clubs of Lanier on Monday Oct. 30.
Brenau coaches and athletes started by speaking about the five core values that the NAIA exhibits in the Champions of Character: integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership. Coaches and student athletes went over what each characteristic meant and asked the kids to give examples of how people show those characteristics in their day-to-day lives.
The kids were divided into three groups and participated in activities that various athletic teams set up. The kids played basketball in the gymnasium, tennis on the tennis courts, raced in relays with the track team and played small sided soccer on Wallis Field. Each activity lasted around 30 minutes before the kids rotated to the next.
“Today was a compilation of my favorite things,” said Rebecca Daniels, an early childhood education major and member of the soccer team. “It is our responsibility as student-athletes to be role models of character for children and to always find ways to incorporate communities like the Boys and Girls Clubs.”
