Award-winning Los Angeles artist Paul Paiement will exhibit his contemporary, multimedia and installation works at Brenau University starting on Thursday, Jan. 18.
An artist talk will be held Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. during an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. at Sellars Gallery on the historic Gainesville campus. The reception and talk are free and open to the public.
Paiement’s exhibit includes paintings from his Nexus series. He uses plexiglass overlays and other multimedia on landscapes to create perspective and geometric abstraction.
“The Nexus series showcases the organic and synthetic all at once,” Brenau Gallery Director Gena Brodie Robbins said. “By combining elements of the natural world with fresh perspective and abstract elements, Paiement creates intricate, layered images that invite viewers to explore its depths.”
Nexus was inspired by the similarities of the current time period with the Romantic era.
“Our fast-paced, controlled, ordered, synthetic, technologically-driven culture has created a deep desire to reconnect with the vast and ever changing,” Paiement said in his artist’s statement about the Nexus series. “Like Henry David Thoreau in Walden, we seek a slower, more deliberate life.”
Paiement was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. He earned a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Southern California and has shown internationally and stateside in both solo and group shows. His solo exhibitions include the Louvre and Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, the Palazzo del Bargello in Gubbio, Italy, and the Laguna Art Museum in California, among others. Paiement is a tenured professor at Cypress College, where he teaches painting and drawing.
Paiement’s exhibit will run until March 14.
