Our Purpose
The purpose of the Brenau University Institutional Review Board (IRB) is to ensure the protection of any human subjects involved in research projects conducted under the auspices of the university in any capacity.
Any research activity that involves human subjects, whether conducted on a large or small scale, whether a preliminary or fully designed research study, whether conducted by students or faculty, whether funded or not, and whether it involves minimal risk or more than minimal risk, is subject to IRB guidelines and review.
Compliance with Guidelines
Brenau University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) strives to comply with guidelines as defined by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Human Research Protection, and to put into practice the principles outlined in the Belmont Report.These guidelines extend to include review and oversight of any activity that involves human subjects or participants. The policy also applies to visitors of the university, and/or use of non-public records associated with the university to identify, contact, or recruit human subjects.

The Institutional Review Board
The IRB at Brenau University is composed of faculty and staff members representing both scientific and non-scientific fields and a member from the community. The IRB meets regularly during the academic year and all meetings are open to the public except in cases where the chair deems confidentiality necessary.
The meeting dates for 2024-25 are forthcoming.
Submission Overview
IRB applications are submitted by Principal Investigators (PIs) to IRBnet and reviewed by committee members on a continuous basis. Exempt and expedited reviews are assigned to reviewers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Projects designated as full board are assigned for review at a committee meeting.
