On Wednesday, Sept. 8, The Women’s College of Brenau University held a GOLDen Picnic at the amphitheatre on Brenau’s historic campus.
The picnic was part of the “L” year, which focuses on leadership, in The Women’s College’s GOLD Program. This follows the “G” year dedicated to gender awareness and the “O” year, which was about ownership of personal responsibility and challenged students to participate in the democratic process. The ensuing “D” year will focus on diversity.
Debra Dobkins, dean of The Women’s College, said the event was a great way for students to build a strong sense of community while celebrating being together on campus.
“Most of those in attendance are first-year students, and we wanted to help them feel like part of Brenau,” Dobkins said. “We plan on hopefully holding something bigger at a later date with drawings and prizes.”
Attendees were treated to food, music and a visit from HJ, Brenau’s mascot. During one of the picnic’s activities, students wrote down their worries and fears for college on a plate, and then smashed them with hammers.
“I liked the symbolism of breaking your fears because in life there are a lot of fears,” said Uneike Moore, first-year middle grades education major from Woodstock, Georgia. “Not just in college. You’ve got fears everywhere. I might do this again.”
